Breakdown

Mtn PA Y Sit is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun 11 personnel that uses a run fake to hold the linebackers before the QB works a sit route from the Y (tight end) against zone coverage. The blocking scheme mirrors the Mountain outside zone action to sell the run fake and slow down edge defenders on the play-action rollout or boot look. The primary read progression starts with the Y sit route settling in the intermediate zone window, then works to any deep shot route or backside comeback if the sit route is capped, making this a zone beater first with man beater upside if the TE gets a favorable matchup on a linebacker.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth immediately after the snap: if they step up hard to defend the run fake, the sit route window opens up instantly for an easy completion. Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap, since single high Cover 3 leaves the intermediate middle vulnerable to the sit route while two high Cover 4 can rob it with a robber defender. Key the flow of the strong side linebacker or Mike, since a user controlled defender sitting in the throwing lane or spying the TE can jump the sit route and bait a pick six if the QB stares it down. Look for edge defenders staying home instead of biting on the zone fake, which signals a disciplined defense that will also have contain on the play-action boot and force a checkdown. Beware of Cover 2 man or press man concepts with underneath linebackers in trail technique, since this route combo struggles against tight man coverage without a hot route adjustment on the backside.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when you have already established the Mtn Outside Zone run to make the play-action fake believable to the defense.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the sit route from the Y will have plenty of room to settle in the intermediate zone before the linebackers can get depth.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers crashing downhill on run fakes, this is your money play since the sit route exploits the vacated middle zone.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you see man coverage across the board, since the sit concept alone will not beat tight man unless the TE wins on the release.

Sequence this play after running Mtn Outside Zone and Inside Zone Split a few times in the same set so linebackers start biting on the run action, then hit them with this play-action shot for a big chunk gain.
