Inside Zone is the base zone run out of Shotgun Normal Off Close Wk with 11 personnel, showing the HB aligned next to the QB and a single blocking arrow pointing from the backfield through the strong side gap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, flowing in unison to the play side to seal running lanes while the TE and receivers stay in their route stems to occupy defenders. This is a pure run play designed to attack the interior gaps, with the primary read progressing from the play side A gap to the B gap and finally bouncing outside if the frontside is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box: if the defense stacks seven or more defenders inside the tackles, this run gets squeezed and you should consider audibling to a pass. Watch linebacker depth, if they are sitting at five yards or deeper they have time to read and fill, killing the cutback lanes. Man coverage on the outside with linebackers playing downhill in run fits is the ideal shell to attack since nobody is spying the cutback. Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers reading run keys can be tougher, especially if the Mike linebacker gets a fast diagnose and flows to the play side gap immediately. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the mesh point or crashing the play side A gap pre-snap, that is a sign the defense is sitting on inside zone and you should consider bouncing outside or checking to an RPO.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box before snapping it. If you see two safeties deep with a light box, this is a green light run every time. Use your zone read vision to press the play side A gap first, then bounce to the B gap if the linebacker flows too fast, and cut it back if the defense overpursues. Pair this with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Zone Alert from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run and the quick game off identical formation and motion. Best called on early downs (first and ten or second and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls. Against aggressive user blitzers flying downhill, trust your blocks and stay patient rather than juking prematurely.
