Breakdown

RPO Zone Alert is a run pass option built off an inside zone look from Shotgun 11 personnel. The offensive line runs its zone blocking scheme while the HB reads the alert defender aligned inside the box, giving the QB a give or pull decision based on that defender's flow. Outside the box, the backside WR runs a vertical stem into a corner break while the slot runs a quick vertical stick and the boundary receiver runs a flat breaking route, giving the QB a quick pass alert if the numbers box shows pass keys. The primary read is the alert defender in the box, then the QB moves to the flat route as the pass alert before ever considering the deep corner breaking route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the second level defender closest to the mesh point since this is the true alert key for the RPO. If that linebacker or safety crashes down immediately at the snap, the QB should pull and throw the flat route for a quick easy gain. Man coverage on the flat defender with tight outside leverage can jump the route, so respect a cornerback playing low and inside. Zone shells with a hard flowing linebacker to the play side flat take away the pass alert and force the offense into the run, so defenders should sprint to fill run lanes rather than sit in zone drops. Nano blitzes or edge pressure off the play side can disrupt the mesh point before the QB reads the alert defender, so protect that gap with a hot route or chip if you see extra rushers loading the box.

Usage Tips

Presnap, count the box defenders and identify if the defense is showing run support or a two high shell that leaves the alert defender isolated. If the linebacker crashes hard toward the mesh point, pull the RPO and get the ball out quickly to the flat route for an easy access throw. Use this play on early downs like first and second and ten to punish defenses that stack the box against your run game. Against zone heavy defenses, trust the give since the zone blocking scheme creates natural cutback lanes if the alert defender sits flat footed.
