Breakdown

Double Post is a five man route concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel with the two closed side receivers stacking vertical post routes at different depths to create a natural high low against the deep middle of the field. The backside receiver runs a deep drag across the field while the TE releases to a shallow out and the HB checks out of the backfield on a swing route to the flat, giving the quarterback a full field progression from the double posts to the checkdown. This is a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams between the safeties, with the shallow post occupying the underneath defender while the deep post splits the safeties. Primary read progression starts with the deep post, works down to the shallow post sitting behind it, then bails to the drag or HB swing if both safeties collapse.

Defensive Reads

Key the safeties before the snap, if they are aligned deep and split evenly you are looking at Cover 2 or Cover 4 which this play is designed to exploit. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field post snap, since a user controlled safety can jump the shallow post and undercut the throw. Man coverage with no help over the top shuts this concept down quickly, if you see man alignment on the outside receivers switch your primary read to the drag or HB swing. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers can force a quick throw, so identify overloaded fronts pre-snap and be ready to check down immediately to the HB swing. Cover 3 with a deep middle defender can also disrupt the double post since that defender has help getting over the top, look for the single high safety rotating late before deciding your first read.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap identify two high or one high safety alignment, since this concept is built specifically to punish two high shells like Cover 2 and Cover 4 where the posts split the safety help.

If the defense shows one high, be ready to check the deep post into a comeback or work the drag route as your primary since the middle of the field will be occupied.

Hot route the HB swing into a stick or angle route against man coverage if the linebacker shows blitz, this gives you a faster outlet without losing the double post read.

Use this play on second and medium or third and long situations when you expect a two high shell, since the defense is more likely to sit back in zone rather than blitz.

Pair this with Comeback Z Post or Levels Mills in your play calling sequence, running similar route stems early to set up defenders biting on the shallow post before hitting the deep shot later in the drive.
