Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the cornerback depth on the corner route side, tight press alignment signals man coverage and tells you the corner beater is live. Identify single high safety versus two high shells before the snap, single high opens the corner route while two high forces you to underneath options. Post-snap, watch for a user lurking underneath the corner route, if a linebacker or safety sits in that throwing lane, come off it immediately to the drag. Zone drops from the flat defender key the swing route, if that defender sinks late the flat window opens for a quick checkdown. Blitz recognition matters here, if the slot defender crashes early instead of respecting the chip, the quarterback needs to get the ball out fast on the drag before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Read the corner route first, it is your primary against single high safety looks and off man coverage on the outside cornerback.
If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, work the drag and flat combo underneath since the corner window shrinks against split safety shells.
Use the chip release from the slot receiver to slow down edge blitzers on nano blitz packages, this buys the quarterback extra time to climb the pocket.
Best called on second and medium to second and long, where the corner route can pick up a chunk gain without needing to force it into tight coverage.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a series to get linebackers cheating downhill, then hit the corner route behind them once they bite on run action.
