PA Slide is a play-action pass out of Shotgun 11 personnel that sells the outside zone run fake before attacking the field with a vertical shot and layered underneath routes. Off the fake, the backside receiver runs a deep post/dig breaking route up the seam while two receivers to the play side run a slide combo, one settling into a shallow flat and the other working underneath at intermediate depth. The line executes zone run blocking to hold the fake, and the primary read progression starts with the deep breaking route against a blown coverage shot, then works down to the slide flat concept if the top is covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a single high or two high safety shell, single high alignments are more vulnerable to the deep breaking route once the play fakes freezes the linebackers. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the zone run fake it opens up the intermediate window for the underneath slide route. Post-snap, user the deep defender responsible for the post/dig route since this concept lives and dies on whether that safety respects run action. Cover 3 with an aggressive box crashing the fake gets gashed by the deep shot, but disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties reading the quarterback's eyes will sit on the vertical break and force you to the flat. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the shallow zone, that user threat can jump the flat route and turn it into a turnover if the defense stays home on the run fake.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are keying run based on personnel and formation tendencies. Check safety depth before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating up to respect the run fake, take the deep breaking route immediately off the play-action. Hot route the flat runner into a quick out if you see a corner sitting low in zone to give yourself an easy checkdown against soft zone shells. Pair this play with Mtn Outside Zone and Inside Zone Split in the same set so the defense has to respect the actual zone run look before you hit them with the play-action shot. Use PA Slide on second and third down calls sparingly to keep the run fake credible, then dial it up once you have established tendencies with your ground game.
