Zona HB Screen is a classic screen pass out of Shotgun Box with 10 personnel, designed to slow down aggressive pass rushes and hit blitz-happy defenses for a big gain. The offensive line sets up a delayed release to get out in front of the halfback, forming a wall of blockers as the HB slips out of the backfield to the flat. The primary read is the halfback himself: check the screen developing first, and only work through underneath zone defenders or linebackers who might be sitting on the throw before committing.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in man coverage or showing an all out blitz look, since both situations open up running lanes for the HB before defenders can react. Watch for a spy or a linebacker staying home in the box post-snap, since a disciplined defender sitting underneath can jump the screen and blow it up for a loss. Zone defenses with linebackers reading the quarterback's eyes will often sniff this screen out immediately, so avoid calling it against a defense that has already shown zone drops with short flat coverage. If you see a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or shading toward the flat pre-snap, abort the screen read and go through your progression to a secondary option instead. Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells with disciplined linebacker eyes on the backfield are the biggest threat to this play, since those defenders can read and react before the blockers get set.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you diagnose an all out blitz or aggressive defensive line stunt pre-snap, since the extra rushers create running lanes once your blockers get out ahead of the HB.
Use it on early downs or after a big run to keep defenses honest, then pair it with Inside Zone from this same Box set so defenses have to respect both the run and the screen out of the same look.
Hold the throw button just slightly longer than usual to let your linemen release and set their blocks before delivering the pass, throwing too early results in the HB catching the ball with no lane.
If the defense shows Cover 0 or man pressure pre-snap, this is your green light play since there is no underneath zone defender sitting on the screen.
Sequence this after Deep Curls or Slot Trail to bait linebackers into dropping deep, then hit the HB Screen when they overcommit to coverage.
