Choice H-Sneak lines up in Shotgun Box with a bunched three-man look near the formation and a lone receiver split out wide. The wide receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers as an isolated shot route, the outside receiver from the bunch pushes up and breaks into a corner route toward the sideline, and the H-back runs an option route out of the bunch that can settle in the flat or curl back depending on the coverage. The fifth eligible receiver stems across the field on a shallow drag underneath everything. Blocking is not shown since this is a pure drop back pass concept, and the primary read starts with the option route from the H-back before working to the corner route and then the vertical seam if the defense sells out on the underneath stuff.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the defender over the H-back before the snap, since tight man coverage there tells you the option route will break away from that leverage for an easy completion. Check safety depth: if both safeties sit shallow or one rotates down late, that is your cue the corner route has a soft spot to work against Cover 2 or Cover 4. Man coverage with no underneath help lets the shallow drag pull a linebacker or nickel defender out of position, so key on whether that defender bites hard on the crosser. Cover 3 with a fast flowing flat defender can jump the option route in the flat phase, so be ready to work the vertical seam if you see the corner sink underneath at the snap. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the toughest matchup for this concept since the quick option route becomes the only clean answer before pressure arrives, so recognize disguised blitz packages pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out immediately.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since the option route from the H-back reads leverage off the nearest defender and thrives against man coverage when that defender has inside or outside help. Use the option route as your rhythm throw on early downs to keep the defense honest, then come back to the corner route on third and medium once defenders start jumping the shallow drag. If you see a nano blitz or overload pressure look pre-snap, hot route the drag runner to sit down quickly as a checkdown valve against the rush. Pair this play with HB Screen or Quads Screen earlier in a drive so aggressive user blitzers get burned, making them hesitate when you come back to Choice H-Sneak later in the series. Against zone heavy opponents, drag your eyes to the vertical seam route since it splits the coverage window between the flat defender and the deep safety in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.
