Quads Screen aligns all four eligible receivers to one side out of Shotgun 10 personnel and is designed to get the ball out quickly to a bubble or flat screen while the offensive line sets up a wall in front of the ballcarrier. It is a pure screen play built to punish aggressive pass rushes and man coverage that flows hard upfield, using stacked or bunched receivers to create natural picks and rub routes against man defenders trying to press or chase. The primary read is the screen itself, usually to the innermost or shallowest receiver in the quad set, with the quarterback progressing outward through the stack if the first option is blanketed or if a defender sits in the throwing lane.
Defensive Reads
Identify whether the defense is showing man coverage with corners aligned tight to the quad receivers, since this play thrives against man because of the natural rub and pick concepts inside the bunch. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting flat footed near the line of scrimmage post snap, since a disciplined defender reading screen can jump the route before the blockers get set. Check safety depth pre-snap: a two high shell that stays passive is easier to attack than a single high safety who can fly down and blow up the screen from depth. Key on user controlled defenders near the box, since a smart user player will bait the quarterback by showing blitz then dropping into the screen lane to jump the throw. Zone coverage with disciplined underneath defenders squatting on the flat and bubble areas is the biggest counter to this play, since it clogs the throwing lane and forces the quarterback into a late, risky throw.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight over the quad receivers or a single high safety rotating late, since the pick action inside the bunch creates natural separation against man defenders. Use it on early downs or after a hard run play has drawn the defense's linebackers upfield, since overaggressive run fits leave the screen lanes wide open. Hot route the backside single receiver into a hitch or streak if you expect single coverage, giving you a bailout option if the screen side gets read by a user linebacker. Sequence this play right after Quads Jailbreak Screen or Zona HB Screen in the same drive to condition the defense into keying screen fakes, then hit them with Deep Fork or Mtn Cross Dagger out of a similar look. Avoid calling this against known blitz-heavy defenses unless you have already seen them jump routes, since a well timed inside blitz can blow up the screen before the wall sets.
