Inside Zone out of Shotgun Box (10 personnel) is a base zone run play designed to hit between the tackles with a single lead cutback lane. The diagram shows the HB aligned next to the QB taking the handoff and attacking the A gap with a hard interior track, while the offensive line executes zone steps across the front to seal running lanes and climb to the second level. This is a pure run play with no route combos attached, and the primary read is the playside gap first, with a bounce or cutback to the backside cutback lane if the playside is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box and identify if the defense has stacked an extra defender inside to spy the A gap run. Watch linebacker depth: linebackers sitting shallow at 3 to 4 yards signal quick fill and can be gashed with a cutback if they overpursue. Man beaters, plays like WR Cross or Slot Trail, work well as complements once linebackers start creeping up to stop the run. Nano blitz packages with an extra rusher crashing the playside gap can blow this up before the back reaches the line, so recognize A gap pressure pre-snap. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles: if they get washed down playside, the backside cutback lane opens for a big gain.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Use the HB vision cone and stick to your zone read rather than forcing the playside gap if a linebacker fills fast.
Pair this with play-action shots like PA QB Choice or Mtn Cross Dagger from the same formation and personnel to keep the defense honest on run fits.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are still diagnosing run versus pass out of 10 personnel.
