Breakdown
Switch Post out of Shotgun Box (10 personnel) shows a switch release concept to the field side paired with a screen and a checkdown to the boundary. The two receivers to the right cross paths at the snap, with the outside man running a deep post while the inside receiver clears vertically up the seam before breaking outside on a corner-ish route, creating natural traffic for man defenders. On the backside, the slot runs a go route straight up the numbers while the running back releases into the flat off a screen action, giving the QB a built-in outlet against pressure. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the switch release rub at the top of the routes, with the deep post as the first read and the RB flat route as the checkdown against a blitz.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is shaded to the field or aligned deep middle, since a two high shell forces the QB to hold the post longer and increases sack risk. Watch the corner over the switch release: if he passes off the receivers in a zone match scheme, the post gets picked up quickly and the play should be abandoned for the flat route. Key the middle linebacker's depth after the snap, since a shallow drop can undercut the seam route and force the QB into a difficult window on the post. If the defense shows Cover 3 with the flat defender sitting on the RB's route, the switch post loses its checkdown value and the QB must climb the pocket to find the post or seam. Watch for a slot corner blitz or nano pressure package, since the RB releasing late into the flat won't get there in time to help against an unblocked rusher off the edge.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells before the snap since the post route only has one defender to beat over the top in Cover 1 or Cover 3. If the corner presses at the line, trust the switch release to create natural separation against man coverage. Hot route the flat back to a swing or check him down immediately if you see a nano blitz off the edge, since the RB releases late and needs extra protection time. Use this on early downs or 2nd and medium when defenses are still guessing run versus pass out of Box formation with 10 personnel. Pair this with Quads Switch Seam or Mtn Cross Dagger in the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays use switch releases but attack different levels of the field.
