Mtn Cross Dagger lines up in Shotgun Box with 10 personnel and sends the outside receiver in pre-snap motion across the formation to help identify man versus zone coverage. At the snap the backside receiver runs a deep crosser that sails across the field, the inside slot pushes vertical on a seam or go route, and the boundary X releases outside then breaks into a quick out at the sideline. This is a classic Dagger man and zone beater, with the seam clearing the middle for the crosser and the deep vertical stretching the safety, so the primary read starts with the vertical seam to see if it holds the safety before working to the deep crosser sitting down against zone or working away from man defenders.
Watch the pre-snap motion defender closely, if a linebacker or defensive back follows the motion man across the formation that confirms man coverage and the crosser becomes the priority read. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high alignments often signal Cover 3 which the deep crosser can exploit if the underneath zone defenders sink too deep. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he widens to cover the crosser it opens the seam route behind him for an explosive gain. Beware of user-controlled safeties sitting in a deep lurk position over the crosser route, a smart defender will bait the quarterback into the crosser then jump the throw. Watch for disguised zone blitzes off the edge, since the protection is a standard drop back scheme, a well timed pressure package can force a quick checkdown before the crosser or seam fully develop.
Use the pre-snap motion to diagnose man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are facing man coverage and can lean on the crosser working away from traffic.
Against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3, key the safety on the vertical seam route, if he bites on the seam the crosser will have a huge void behind the linebackers.
On third and medium distances this play shines because the crosser and out route give you two distinct levels to attack, so hot route the flat route to a shallow drag if you need a faster underneath option against a hard blitz.
Pair this play with Deep Fork or WR Cross in your play-calling sequence, since both share similar route stems, this keeps the defense guessing and sets up the Mtn Switch Comeback as a complementary shot play later in the series.
Look to attack Cover 2 shells specifically since the deep crosser splits the safeties, and if you see two deep safeties pre-snap this should be your go-to call.
