Breakdown

Quads RPO Alert QB Draw lines up out of Shotgun with a 10 personnel quads-style look, with two outside receivers releasing vertically up the numbers on go routes to hold the corners and safeties deep. Underneath, the QB reads a designed give or keep RPO mesh, with the diagram showing the QB pulling the ball and running it left behind the fullback or H-back lead blocker while the offensive line sells run action up front. This is a run-first RPO built to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the alert key: if the defense crashes down on the run action, the two vertical releases become the alert throw, otherwise the QB tucks and runs the draw.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 since these often leave light boxes that the QB draw can exploit. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they scrape hard toward the line for run support the alert vertical routes will be wide open behind them. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no safety help over the top gets beaten badly by the go routes if the QB alerts to pass. User-controlled defenders sitting in a robber or spy technique near the line can jump the draw, so respecting that alignment is key before committing to the run phase. Cover 4 or quarters shells with disciplined corners pressing the outside releases tend to shut down the alert throw and force the offense into the draw, which is where a stacked box becomes a problem.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only trust the QB draw phase if you count five or fewer defenders in the box.

Use the alert routes as your first look if a safety rotates down late or a linebacker walks up into an A gap blitz look.

This play pairs well with Quads Jailbreak Screen and Quads Screen since all three punish teams that sit in off man or soft zone trying to take away the draw.

Snap it on second or third and short to medium since the defense is more likely to respect the pass and leave light boxes for the draw phase.

Mix in Inside Zone from the same personnel to keep linebackers honest before dialing up this RPO for the explosive alert shot.
