Overview
Full House Pro is the Pistol formation's heaviest backfield set. It deploys 21 personnel with the quarterback at pistol depth, the halfback directly behind him, the fullback offset beside the QB, and a single tight end attached to the line with a receiver split to each side. Spread-leaning Pistol sets empty the backfield or flex the tight end. This set keeps two lead-capable bodies near the mesh point, which gives the defense a downhill, power-first look before the snap and forces the linebackers to respect the run on every down.
The Full House Pro playbook is built around deception out of that compact look. Read Option and Read Option Wk let the QB key an unblocked edge defender while the fullback serves as an extra lead blocker. HB Dive Wk hammers the A and B gaps away from the tight end. Those run looks set up PA Boot Rt and PA Flood FB Slip, where the fullback leaks into the flat after selling a block and the boot action moves the pocket. Slants gives you a quick-game answer when the defense crowds the box.
The personnel creates matchup leverage because defenses usually answer 21 personnel with base or heavy fronts. That leaves your two wideouts isolated against corners with limited safety help, since the safeties are pulled down into run fits. The fullback also becomes a sneaky receiving threat: linebackers keyed on the mesh or scraping to the option often lose him entirely on the slip, which turns a nominal blocker into a free checkdown or a chunk gain.
Strengths
- PA Flood FB Slip is a strong Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater: the play fake freezes the flat defender and hook players, stretching the zone vertically with the deep route, the intermediate out, and the fullback slipping underneath into the vacated flat.
- Read Option and Read Option Wk punish defenses that crash the backside end or blitz off the edge, and a heavy box leaves fewer defenders free to spy the QB once he pulls it.
- PA Boot Rt moves the launch point away from interior pressure and gives you a clean high-low read on the boot side, which is effective against Cover 1 when the robber bites on the run action.
- Slants works as a built-in man beater against press and Cover 0 looks, and you can hot route the TE to a flat or the halfback to a quick out to create a clearing combo with the inside breakers.
- The heavy 21 alignment baits defenses into base or goal line personnel, which leaves your outside receivers on islands and simplifies pre-snap reads on where the single-high safety is rotating.
Weaknesses
- The play count is thin, so savvy opponents quickly learn that the pass game is mostly play action, boot, or slants, and they can sit on those concepts after a few series.
- Only two true receivers run routes on most plays, which makes it hard to beat Cover 2 Man or 2 Man Under without heavy hot routing, since underneath defenders can trail with safety help over the top.
- A user-controlled linebacker or spy sitting on the mesh point can blow up both read options and the FB Slip, especially if he reads the fullback release instead of chasing the play fake.
- PA Boot Rt is vulnerable to edge contain or a nano blitz off the boot side, since a free rusher off the right edge meets the QB before the flood develops.
- The two-back look tips your hand in obvious passing downs, so opponents can safely drop into deep zone coverage on 3rd and long and force you into low-percentage throws.
Usage Tips
Lean on Full House Pro on early downs and short yardage, where HB Dive Wk and the read options make the defense commit numbers to the box before you call play action.
Before the snap, identify the unblocked edge defender on Read Option. If he stays home or is user-controlled, give the ball; if he crashes toward the mesh, pull it and attack the edge.
After you establish the dive, call PA Flood FB Slip against Cover 3 and read deep to flat. Hit the fullback immediately if the flat defender carries the deep out or bites on the fake.
When you see press man with a single high safety or a Cover 0 blitz look, audible to Slants and consider hot routing the tight end to a quick flat or slant to overload the leverage side.
If you see heavy edge pressure to the right, avoid PA Boot Rt. Flip to Read Option Wk or HB Dive Wk to punish the overcommitted edge, and use motion with the fullback to confirm man versus zone before the snap.
