Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell) since this play is built to exploit zone defenders who flow toward the run fake. Watch the flat defender on the boot side: if he stays home and does not bite on play action, the corner route will be contested and the QB should reset to the backside crosser. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker and weak side linebacker depth: if they step up hard on the run fake, the deep crossing route will have a wide throwing lane behind them. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB rollout or lurking in the throwing lane of the deep dig, since a smart user defender can jump the crosser if the play fake does not sell. This concept is shut down by disciplined zone teams that keep linebackers deep in coverage and by man coverage with an edge contain defender who forces the QB to throw off platform before reaching the boot side.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and medium) when you have already established the run game out of Full House Pro to sell the play-action fake. Check the safety depth pre-snap: if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards in Cover 2 shell, hot route the backside crosser to sit down in the soft spot between the linebackers and safety. Pair this with HB Dive Wk and Read Option earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake and linebackers step up, opening the crossing route. If the boot side flat defender squats hard, drag the QB further outside the pocket before throwing the corner route to give it time to clear the cornerback. Avoid calling this against aggressive man blitz packages unless you have hot routed the backside route to a quick out, since the naked boot leaves the QB exposed if the edge is not sold on the fake.
