Read Option Wk lines up out of Pistol Full House Pro with two backs flanking the QB and a TE attached to the formation, giving the offense a true zone read look. At the snap the offensive line takes a weakside zone blocking scheme, sealing the edge to the left while the QB reads the unblocked defensive end to decide between the give and the keep. This is a pure run play with an option element built in, designed to punish overaggressive edge defenders and light boxes rather than to attack coverage with routes.
Defensive Reads
Identify the alignment of the play side defensive end pre-snap since his leverage tells you whether the keep lane or dive lane will be open. Look for a Mike linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap, which signals a run blitz that can be countered by pulling the ball outside on the option. Man coverage with safeties rotated down into the box is ideal for this play since it removes extra run support on the perimeter. Zone shells with two deep safeties and a slow-flowing linebacker crew get gashed if the QB reads correctly and gets outside contain. Watch for a scraping linebacker or edge defender staying home on the QB, this contain-and-squeeze technique combined with a hard crash from the DE takes away both options and should signal an audible to a different concept.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only call this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to guarantee a numbers advantage on the edge. Watch the defensive end's first step at the snap since he is your read key, if he crashes down on the dive give the ball, if he sits or widens pull it and attack the alley. Use this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep defenses honest against your dive and PA game out of the same set. Pair it with HB Dive Wk to sell the same zone action then hit them with PA Boot Rt or PA Flood FB Slip once the defense starts jumping run fits. Motion or shift pre-snap to bait linebackers into showing blitz or spy intentions before the snap so your read is easier post-snap.
