Slants out of Pistol Full House Pro (21 personnel) sends both X and Z receivers on quick slant routes crossing underneath from either side, while the two running backs flare out and up the sidelines as checkdown or wheel options. This is a man beater built for quick separation against press or off man coverage, using the slants to create instant leverage and rubbing off tight man defenders. The primary read progression is slant to slant based on which side the defense leaves softer, then check down to the flaring backs if both slants are covered.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment, since press man corners are highly vulnerable to the quick slant releases. Post-snap, watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, as that player can jump both slant routes and bait a costly interception. This play struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone with disciplined underneath linebackers who sink into the passing lanes and take away the slant windows. Look for man blitz packages that bring extra rushers, since the quick slant release gets the ball out before pressure arrives and punishes blitz-heavy defenses. If linebackers show zone drop depth immediately at the snap, expect the middle of the field to be flooded, so anticipate needing the flare routes to running backs as the answer.
Pre-snap, identify which cornerback is playing tighter man or press technique and target the slant away from that leverage.
Against zone shells, use the running back flares as the outlet since the slants can get squeezed by underneath zone defenders sitting in the throwing lanes.
Hot route one of the running backs into a quick flat or seam if you see a Cover 3 buzz rotation, since the flares already stress the edges of zone drops.
Use Slants on early down and medium distance to set up PA Boot Rt from the same formation, since the run action off Full House Pro pairs well with the quick passing look here.
Pair this play with Read Option or HB Dive Wk in your call sheet to keep linebackers honest on run fits before dialing up the slant concept for a big void underneath.
