PA Flood FB Slip is a play-action flood concept out of the Pistol Full House Pro formation that overloads one side of the field with three vertical stems at different depths. Off the play fake, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical route up the numbers, the slot receiver runs an intermediate crosser that settles in as an over route toward the flood side, and the fullback slips out of the backfield fake into the flat as the checkdown option. On the backside, a single receiver runs a comeback/out breaker to hold the corner. The primary read progression starts with the deep vertical shot, works down to the intermediate crosser sitting behind the linebackers, and finishes with the FB slip in the flat as the layup answer against pressure or fast-flowing zone defenders. This is a classic Cover 3 beater since it stacks three levels into one deep third and forces the flat defender to choose between the FB and the underneath crosser.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender (usually a linebacker or slot corner) after the snap since he has to choose between sitting on the FB slip or carrying the underneath crosser, and that conflict is the core of this concept. Watch the deep third defender to the flood side; if he widens with the vertical route, the intermediate crosser will have room to sit down behind the second level. Diagnose single-high safety looks pre-snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the flat defender outnumbered three-to-one on the flood side. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the flat or lurking underneath the crosser, as an aggressive user squat can jump the FB slip or the intermediate route and turn it into a pick-six. Two-high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined zone drops can shut this down by getting quick depth on the vertical and squeezing the crosser, so be ready to check to a different play if the safeties rotate two-high pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the strong safety to confirm single-high versus two-high before the snap since this concept thrives against Cover 3 and single-high shells.
If the corner to the flood side is playing off, take the shot on the deep vertical route immediately off the play fake before the pass rush closes the pocket.
Against man coverage, hot route the fullback to a quick flat or angle release since the flood combo naturally clears out space and the FB can win late against a linebacker in man.
Use this on early downs (first or second and medium) to keep defenses honest off run action, then pair it with Read Option or Read Option Wk from the same set so defenses cannot key on run versus pass tendencies.
If the defense shows blitz pre-snap, get the ball out fast to the FB slip since it is the built-in hot route answer against pressure off the play fake.
