Roll Cover 3 Cloud is a zone rotation coverage out of the Nickel 2-4-5 that rolls the defense into a three deep, four under shell with the corner rotating down as the cloud defender over the flat. The cloud corner sits outside and underneath to jump quick outs, hitches, and bubble screens while the deep third safeties and remaining corner split the field vertically. This is a zone beater killer rather than an offensive play, and the primary read for the defense is the flat to intermediate curl area since the cloud corner and curl linebacker combo squeeze the short and intermediate throwing lanes on that side before the play rotates to deep thirds.
Pre-snap, identify the boundary corner depth to know which side the cloud rotation is coming from and expect that corner to sit low in the flat. Key the running back release on third down since this shell is vulnerable to natural man beaters like flat routes into wheel routes if the underneath defender bites too hard. Watch for offenses stacking receivers or bunching to the cloud side since natural picks can spring receivers open in the flat before the corner can react. Post snap, user the deep third safety to the open side since this coverage is stressed vertically on the backside if the offense sends a deep post or go route away from the cloud rotation. This shell struggles against high low stretches on the backside curl to flat combo, so watch linebacker leverage if the offense runs a smash concept away from the roll.
Call this against offenses that live on quick game to the boundary since the cloud corner erases hitches, quick outs, and bubble screens immediately.
Use pre-snap motion recognition to confirm which side the cloud rotates to before the snap, then user the flat defender on that side to squat on shallow crossers.
Mix this in with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Match in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key on corner depth and guess whether the flat or the deep third is weak.
Ideal on early downs or short yardage passing situations where you expect quick game or screens rather than deep shots.
Hot route the backside curl linebacker into a deeper drop if you see a lot of dig or deep out concepts attacking away from the cloud side.
