Breakdown

Cover 2 Man is a five-under, two-deep man coverage look out of the Nickel 2-4-5 personnel group. The diagram shows four underneath defenders (the squares) squatting with press man responsibilities on the interior and slot receivers while the two deep safeties (the blue zones) split the field and read their assigned receivers on the outside, ready to help over the top. This is a man coverage call designed to shut down quick game and shallow crosses, since the underneath defenders trail their assignments with safety help against any vertical shots down the seams or sidelines.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are sitting deep and wide at the numbers, that confirms the two deep shell and tells you vertical shots down the middle should be less of a concern. Watch the slot cornerback alignment, tight man coverage on the slot receiver signals this Cover 2 Man look rather than a zone match concept. This call gets exposed against rub routes and pick concepts since the underneath defenders are true man and can get rerouted or picked off natural traffic. Post snap, key the flow of the underneath defenders, if they are mirroring receivers step for step rather than sitting in zone drops, that confirms man coverage and you can attack with option routes or hesitation moves. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, a smart user player will rob crossing routes and shallow drags even though the base call is man coverage underneath.

Usage Tips

Pre snap, identify if the offense is stacking or bunching receivers, since Cover 2 Man can get picked on by natural rub routes that create separation against man defenders.

This call is best on early downs or third and medium when you expect quick game or shallow crosses rather than deep shots, since the underneath defenders are locked in man with no safety help until the ball gets deep.

Use your user controlled defender to jump the shortest route in the concept, usually a slant or flat route, since the CPU man defenders can get beat on double moves without your help.

Mix this in with Cover 2 Invert or Tampa 2 from the same Nickel 2-4-5 grouping to disguise your safety rotation and keep quarterbacks guessing between true two deep zone and this man variant.

Audible your slot corner to bump or press coverage on obvious passing downs to disrupt release timing against option routes and stick concepts.
