Breakdown

Edge Blitz 0 is a Cover 0 zero blitz out of Nickel 2-4-5 that brings pressure off both edges while leaving every eligible receiver in man coverage with no deep help. The diagram shows all four interior defenders and both edge rushers converging toward the middle of the field, with the two outside corners and both safeties locked into man assignments on the perimeter. This is a pure blitz play designed to win with speed and disguise off the snap, not a coverage shell, so the primary read for the defense is simply getting an unblocked rusher home before the quarterback's protection can adjust, with the strong side edge rusher serving as the first look off the snap.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the running back checking into a chip block or staying in as a sixth protector before the snap, since that indicates the offense expects pressure and plans to slide protect toward your edge rushers. If the quarterback is under center with two backs or heavy personnel, expect max protect looks that neutralize your edge rush and force you into a coverage bind on an island. Read the receiver splits before the snap, tight splits or bunch formations often signal quick game or rub routes designed to beat man coverage before your rush arrives. Post-snap, key on any receiver breaking immediately underneath at the sticks, since with no deep safety help a quick out or slant against a beaten corner can be an instant explosive play against this call. This play shuts down teams that rely on deep drop dropback passing and empty protection, but it gets exposed against quick RPOs, screens, and hot route audibles that get the ball out before the rush arrives.

Usage Tips

Call this on third and long or in two minute situations when the offense is likely to run a five or seven step drop, since the zero blitz needs time to develop but also punishes deep drop protections.

Check the pre-snap alignment for tight ends or running backs staying in to block, because extra protectors can pick off your edge rushers and turn this into a coverage bust if your corners cannot hold up on an island.

Use manual control on one of your edge rushers to counter chip blocks from the backfield, since the CPU logic can get rerouted easily on stunts or slide protection.

Pair this with Cover 1 LB Blitz or FS Will Blitz 0 in your play-calling sequence so opponents cannot key blitz tendencies from a single pressure look, keeping quick game and hot route beaters guessing.

Avoid calling this against empty backfield sets or known screen tendencies, since the lack of deep help and the all out rush leaves you exposed to a hot route dump-off or bubble screen for a big gain.
