Cross Sim 2 is a Cover 2 based simulated pressure call out of the Nickel 2-4-5 personnel group that disguises a line stunt blitz behind a five under, two deep zone shell. Both outside cornerbacks sink into deep half responsibilities while the slot corner and TE-side flat defenders drop under, and the interior line runs a crossing X stunt with the two off-ball defenders (shown by the red X) dropping into underneath zones instead of rushing. The two defensive ends bend inside on the stunt to confuse the tackles' blocking assignments, so the primary read is the interior stunt getting a quick pressure win up the middle while the two deep safeties clean up anything that gets over the top.
Pre-snap, check if the offense is running a hot route heavy spread look, since quick game beats the stunt before it develops. Watch for the running back staying in to block, which tips that the offense recognizes pressure and is protecting the interior gap the stunt is attacking. Post-snap, key on the two deep safeties staying high and outside to protect against deep shots over the top while the stunt works underneath. This beats man concepts and drop back passing games that rely on a clean pocket, but it is vulnerable to hot routes, screens, and quick RPO game that gets the ball out before the stunt wins. If the quarterback checks down immediately or throws to the flat, the underneath zone defenders need to close space fast since the stunt sacrifices an extra rusher for coverage numbers.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when offenses expect a standard Cover 2 shell and are not anticipating pressure. Show the base Cover 2 look pre-snap so quarterbacks key it as a soft zone and hold the ball, then let the interior stunt collapse the pocket before they can climb the pocket. Pair this with Show SS Sim 2 and Sim Pressure 3 in the same play calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot distinguish between the disguised pressure and the standard drop coverage looks. Use user control on one of the underneath defenders to jump quick slants or drag routes that offenses throw to beat what they think is a vanilla Cover 2. Avoid calling this against empty formations or heavy shotgun spread sets where the quarterback has a fast clock read, since the stunt needs an extra half second to develop.
