Breakdown

1 Double TE out of Nickel 2-4 shows four receivers stacked tight to the formation running vertical stems, with three defenders released straight downfield and one running back or tight end breaking outside on a shallow angle route out of the backfield. This is a Cover 1 man beater built to attack single high coverage with a vertical clear out concept, using the outside breaking route as the primary hot route against man defenders who bite on the initial release. The read progression starts with the shallow angle breaking route since it isolates a linebacker or nickel defender in man coverage, then climbs to the vertical routes if the underneath defender sinks or the safety in the middle of the field opens a throwing lane.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high safety, this confirms Cover 1 or Cover 3 and tells you the vertical routes have a chance to work. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into deep zone drops instead of matching the outside breaking route in man, you are likely facing a zone shell disguised as man. Key the nickel or slot defender assigned to the shallow angle route, aggressive man technique means this route will be covered tightly and you should progress to the vertical stems. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field post-snap, this indicates Cover 1 Robber and will jump any in cutting routes over the middle. If the defense brings extra pressure with a blitz package, the shallow outside breaking route becomes your answer against the blitz since it clears quickly to the flat.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety with no rotation this play is designed to punish that Cover 1 shell immediately.

Target the outside breaking route out of the backfield first, it is your quickest answer against man coverage and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.

If the defense shows two high safeties, consider audibling out of this play since the vertical routes will not have the same window against split safety shells.

Use this play on early downs to set up Cover 1 Robber or Cover 1 Hole from the same formation, keeping the defense guessing between man beaters with different answers to the robber defender.

Pair this call with Cover 1 Contain in your play calling sequence so the offense presents the same initial look before diverging into different man coverage attack points.
