Cover 3 Buzz Mable is a zone coverage call out of the Nickel 2-4 set that drops three deep defenders and buzzes a safety down into an underneath zone to help wall off the middle of the field. The diagram shows both outside corners bailing vertically into deep thirds while the deep middle defender sinks to the post, and underneath both inside linebackers and the nickel drop into short zones with one flowing to a shallow curl and the other buzzing to a flat or hook area. This is a zone beater on the offensive side and a defensive call designed to shut down quick game and shallow crossers while keeping a three deep shell intact against vertical shots.
Pre-snap, check if the offense trips receivers to one side, since the buzzed underneath defender is key to squeezing that side's shallow routes. Post-snap, watch the quarterback's eyes for a quick throw to the flat or shallow drag, that is exactly what the buzzed zone defender is sitting on. This shell struggles against deep out routes and corner routes thrown to the boundary before the deep third defender can rotate over, so watch for that combination beating it. Look for the deep middle defender's depth at the snap, if he bites on a play-action fake the seam and post routes behind him become a real vertical threat. Man-beater route combinations with immediate verticals from the slot can stress the underneath buzz defender if he is late getting to his zone drop.
Call this on early downs when you expect the offense to test the middle of the field with drags or shallow crosses since the buzzed safety adds a extra underneath defender there.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap for stacked or bunch receivers, since Cover 3 Buzz Mable's underneath rotation is built to handle quick in-breaking traffic near the hook zones.
Use the flat defenders to squeeze shallow flat routes and force the quarterback to hold the ball, then trust your deep thirds to close on any late vertical shots.
Mix this in after running Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud so quarterbacks cannot key the buzz rotation pre-snap and get comfortable throwing to the flat.
Pair with Cover 1 Robber or Cover 4 Drop Field on the following snap to keep the coverage shell disguised while still protecting the middle of the field.
