Breakdown

Dbl Safety Blitz is a five man pressure look out of Nickel 2-4-5 that sends both safeties crashing downhill off the second level while the four down linemen rush the edges and interior gaps. The two inside linebackers show blitz depth then wall off short zones underneath, giving you a simulated pressure element that can bait quarterbacks into hot throws. This is a run stopping, pressure oriented call designed to overload the box and disrupt timing on quick game, not a coverage shell built to sit back in zone.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since both defenders are showing crash intent, if the offense audibles to max protect or a screen you may need to bail one safety back manually. Watch running back alignment and blocking assignments, offenses that keep the back in to block are anticipating pressure and will look to hot route a receiver into the vacated underneath zone. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap since this blitz collapses the pocket fast and forces early decisions, jump any hitch or slant route thrown into the shrinking window. This call beats man protection schemes and offenses that are slow with their line calls, but it gets exposed by hot routed slants and quick outs if the offense reads blitz and gets the ball out before the safeties arrive. Avoid this against empty formations or trips looks with no back in protection, since the extra blockers can pick up both safety rushers and leave your underneath zones thin against four verticals or deep crossers.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you expect inside zone or gap runs since the double safety crash fills the alley fast and erases cutback lanes.

Use it on third and short or third and medium against offenses that lean on quick game and shallow crosses, since the extra rushers disrupt rhythm throws before route combos develop.

User the strong side safety blitzer to time the snap count and free release into the backfield, then spy the running back with your leftover linebacker if the offense shows shotgun and empty checks.

Disguise this look by aligning your safeties like a standard Cover 1 or Cover 3 shell pre-snap, then bring them late to prevent the quarterback from getting a free access hot route audible.

Pair this call with Cover 1 Robber or Cover 3 Match earlier in a series so opponents cannot key on safety depth, then mix in Dbl Safety Blitz once you have their tempo reads locked in.
