Dbl Safety Blitz is a five man pressure look out of Nickel 2-4 that sends both safeties downhill off the snap while the four man front collapses the pocket. The diagram shows three underneath defenders (the two outside linebackers and the nickel or slot corner) dropping straight down into shallow zone landmarks to clean up any hot routes or check downs, while the two second level dots stay in the middle of the field as the remaining coverage bodies. This is a run and pass blitz designed to overload one or both edges pre snap, forcing the offensive line into tough protection calls, with the primary read being the interior gap or off tackle run fit first, then a blitz kill hot route or checkdown if the offense spreads it out and throws.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check if the offense has trips or bunch formations that can quickly identify the blitz and get the ball out before your rushers arrive. Watch for a running back staying in to chip or check release, which tells you the offense has diagnosed the double safety pressure and is protecting the QB's blind side. Post snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the shallow zone landmarks where your underneath defenders are sitting, since a hesitation there usually means he is looking to scramble or dump it off late. This pressure package dominates against man beater concepts and slow developing play action since it removes the QB's time to climb the pocket. It gets exposed by hot route sight adjustments and quick slants or hitches, so if you see receivers breaking off routes immediately at the snap, know your coverage shell is thin underneath.

Usage Tips

Use this call on early downs when you suspect a run or a quick game passing concept, since the double safety pressure is disguised as a two high shell before the snap.

Bait the QB by showing Cover 2 or Cover 4 alignment with your safeties, then trigger the blitz just before the snap so the offense cannot slide protection to match.

Pair this with Cover 4 Palms or Cover 2 Match earlier in a series so the offense gets comfortable seeing two high safeties, then dial up Dbl Safety Blitz to punish that same shell.

On third and short or in the red zone, this is a great call to force a quick decision from the QB since the underneath defenders sitting on shallow zone landmarks take away hot route outlets.

User the deepest crossing threat or the middle of the field defender if you expect a slot receiver to sit in the void between your shallow zone droppers, since that window is the biggest vulnerability of this call.
