Breakdown

Str Eagle Slant 3 is a zone coverage defense out of the Dime 1-4-6 Big Dime package that shows a Cover 3 shell with a line slant tag up front. Both outside cornerbacks carry vertical routes from the wide receivers into the deep thirds while the strong side flat defender squats underneath, and the underneath four defenders (two X spot droppers and two square icon defenders) work a slanting zone blitz look shown by the red arrows crashing toward the same gap. The MLB or SAM linebacker (yellow) drops to a shallow hook or spy zone as the third level of the zone drops away, giving you three deep, four under spacing with a slant stunt from the front four for added interior pressure. Primary read progression is: identify the deep third safety alignment first, confirm the strong side flat/curl defender is squatting on the underneath routes, then react to whether the line slant creates an unblocked rusher up the middle.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line splits and back alignment pre-snap, since a heavy protection look with extra blockers can pick up the line slant stunt and leave your coverage on an island longer than you want. Post-snap, key the quarterback's eyes to the strong side flat, since that is the softest area if the flat defender bites on play-action or bootleg action. This beats quick slant and stick concepts because the underneath zone slant disrupts the launch point of the route, but it can be exposed by deep crossing routes or seam throws that split the hook defender and the deep third corner. If you see trips or bunch formations to the strong side, be ready to shade the strong safety over the top since the extra receiver can overload the flat and curl zones. Look for the offense to attack the middle hook zone vacated by the slanting linebacker with a delayed drag or tight end seam route once they diagnose the stunt.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect quick game or shallow crossers, since the Cover 3 shell with underneath line slant is built to jump hot routes and short combo routes. Pre-snap, check if the offense is stacking or bunching to the strong side, since the line slant tag can get rerouted if the offensive line slides protection toward the stunt. User the strong side flat defender manually if you expect flat routes or RB checkdowns, since the CPU squat zone can be baited by good route timing. Combine this with Cover 4 Drop or Cover 3 Sky from the same set to disguise your deep shell presnap while still bringing interior pressure, forcing the quarterback to guess between three-deep and four-deep shells. Avoid this call against heavy play-action rollout teams since the line slant can overcommit your interior rushers and open cutback lanes for contain issues on the backside.
