FS Zone Blitz brings the free safety off the edge as a fourth rusher while dropping the defensive line into a zone drop shell underneath. The two outside cornerbacks sit in short zone drops flanking the box, the three deep defenders run vertical zone landmarks to protect against the deep ball, and the interior of the field is covered by a linebacker sinking to a short zone drop and a lineman spying underneath. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while keeping four defenders deep and short zones covered, so the primary read is diagnosing whether the offense's protection accounts for the extra rusher off the safety's angle before the underneath zones fill in behind it.
Pre-snap, check the free safety's depth and angle since a tighter alignment near the box signals the blitz is live. Watch the two purple zone cornerbacks on the outside, they are responsible for the short flat and curl areas so quick hitches and flat routes into their zones get squeezed. The three deep blue zone defenders protect against go routes and deep crossers, so this call is vulnerable if the offense attacks the seams before those defenders gain depth. Post-snap, track the underneath linebacker zone drop and the lineman spy in the middle of the field, they are your lurk threats against drag routes and shallow crosses that try to sit in the void left by the blitzing safety. This play beats man concepts and slow developing dropback passes but can get exposed by hot route conversions to the flat or a quick screen if the offense diagnoses the safety blitz before the snap.
Show base Dime alignment pre-snap and disguise the safety blitz by mugging the free safety late or keeping him off the line until just before the snap. Use this against offenses that rely on quick game and hot routes since the underneath zone drops squeeze passing windows while the blitz forces a fast decision. Pair this call with Cover 4 Drop or Cover 2 Sink on early downs so quarterbacks cannot key the safety's alignment as a blitz tell. Save FS Zone Blitz for third and medium or third and long situations where the extra rusher can create a negative play without fully exposing the deep middle. Combine it in a series with Mike SS 1 Dog to keep the offense guessing about which second-level defender is coming on any given snap.
