Mike SS 1 Dog is a Cover 1 man blitz out of the Dime Big 1-4-6 personnel that brings the Mike linebacker and strong safety off the edge as extra rushers while the rest of the front crosses to disguise the gap they are attacking. The diagram shows five underneath defenders converging with crossing blitz arrows in front of the linebacker level, a deep middle safety sitting alone at the top of the screen to erase the post and go route, and man coverage assigned everywhere else with no true zone drops shown. This is a pressure package designed to beat the pass, not a zone beater, since there is only one deep defender and the rest are locked in man with blitzers crashing downhill. Primary read progression for the defense is trusting the deep safety to rob one route while the underneath defenders funnel the quarterback into the blitz.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a quick-game formation like bunch or stack, since that traffic can pick your blitzers and delay the rush. Watch the single high safety depth before the snap, if he is shaded to one side the offense may attack the opposite half of the field with a deep man beater. Post-snap, key the crossing blitz arrows and make sure your user-controlled defender times the blitz to hit the same gap as the AI blitzers rather than crashing into each other. This call beats man beater concepts and quick slants since the underneath defenders are physical at the line and the blitz collapses the pocket before route combos develop. This call gets exposed by hot routes into flat or screen game, since the blitzers vacate underneath zones and a slot receiver or running back can get the ball out in space before the rush arrives.
Call this on third and medium to third and long when you expect the offense to hold the ball for a deeper drop, since the extra rushers need time to close.
Check the offensive formation for empty backfield or trips looks before the snap, since those spread sets create free access for the Mike and strong safety blitzers to get home untouched.
Use the single high safety at the top of the screen as your eraser for any deep shot play, then let your man defenders underneath play physical at the line to disrupt route timing.
Pair this call with Mike SS 3 Seam and Spinner Dog 3 from the same set so the offense sees similar pre-snap looks but gets different blitz angles and coverage shells, keeping quarterbacks guessing.
Avoid calling this against heavy run personnel or if you see a lead blocker in the backfield, since the blitzers vacating their gaps can get gashed on designed runs or draw plays.
