Breakdown

DB Sting is a five-man pressure package out of the Big Dime 1-4-6 personnel that sends both interior blitzers and a line stunt through the middle of the pocket while the remaining defenders spin into a shallow zone shell underneath. The diagram shows five defenders crashing downhill at the snap, with two DBs looping through gaps off the stunt, a linebacker shooting a straight lane, and the outside rushers squeezing the edges to collapse the pocket quickly. This is a DB blitz designed to win with pure numbers and disguise rather than coverage integrity, so the primary read for the defense is getting a fast home run through the stunt before the quarterback can hit his first read.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line splits pre-snap; wider splits often mean the blocker is anticipating an interior stunt and will slide early, so time your blitz trigger to hit the gap right as the guard commits. If the running back stays in to chip block instead of releasing on a route, expect him to pick up the stunting DB, so counter by manually spying or rerouting him with your user rush. Post-snap, key the quarterback's first two steps; if he is on rhythm with a quick game read like slants or flats, the stunt needs to win immediately or the underneath zone defenders must jump the route. This blitz is vulnerable to hot routes and screens since it commits extra numbers to the rush, so if you see a bubble screen alignment or check release from the backfield, be ready to squeeze down with your zone defenders. Against max protect or six-man pass pro, this stunt loses its advantage since blockers outnumber rushers, so switch to a coverage-heavy call from the set like Cover 3 Sky or Tampa 2 if the offense consistently protects heavy.

Usage Tips

Call DB Sting on third and medium or third and long when you expect a quick dropback game since the stunt needs time to develop and works best against five or six man protections.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in shotgun spread with max protect; if you see six or seven blockers stay home, consider audibling to a coverage call instead since the extra blocker can pick up the stunt.

Use the line stunt timing to your advantage by delaying your user rush slightly so you loop into the vacated gap instead of crashing into a blocker who is already sliding over.

Pair DB Sting with Cover 4 Drop or Cover 1 Robber on early downs so quarterbacks cannot sit back and pattern read your blitz tendencies based on the Dime personnel alone.

Mix in DB Sting 2 Buzz from the same set to keep the same pre-snap look while dropping into a different shell, forcing the quarterback to hesitate on where the pressure is actually coming from.
