Cover 2 Sink is a Dime 1-4-6 zone coverage call that drops both deep safeties into a two-high shell over the top while the underneath defenders sink into passing lanes. The two outside corners and the flanking DBs jam their zones at the numbers with cushion, the two inside underneath defenders (the gray dots) drop into hook/curl zones with mirrored crossing drop paths, and the middle linebacker (olive dot) sprints straight downfield to wall off the deep middle seam. This is a pure zone beater defense with no blitz shown, four defenders in short zones (red arrows) reading the quarterback's eyes while the deep safeties sink to protect against verticals, so the design is built to bracket seam routes and squeeze curl/flat combos rather than to disguise pressure.
Defensive Reads
Read the two deep safeties pre-snap: if they are aligned at depth with outside leverage, this is your two-high shell and it will bracket go routes and deep outs along the sideline. Watch the middle linebacker's vertical sprint post-snap, since his job is to erase any seam or skinny post before it reaches the safeties, making seam shots low value against this call. Underneath, the two hook/curl defenders sink and mirror each other, so attack the soft spot between their drop and the flat defenders with quick out or speed out combos before the zone settles. This shell is vulnerable to any concept that stresses both flats and both seams simultaneously, forcing the corners and safeties to choose, so four verticals with wheel routes from the slot can stretch it if the sink drop is late. It gets shut down against quick game and RPO reads since there is no disguised pressure, meaning a smart quarterback should throw underneath before the sink defenders reach full depth.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a balanced play mix, since the two-high shell holds up against both run and pass without overcommitting. Pre-snap, check for stacked or bunch formations that can flood one of the underneath zones and force a hole in the sink drops. If the offense shows four verticals or double posts, be ready to sink the safeties immediately and trust the deep half shell rather than jumping an underneath route. Pair this with Cover 2 Man and Tampa 2 in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the two-high shell as an automatic zone tell, since both man and Tampa variations look identical pre-snap. Use the flat zone defenders' short drops to jump quick game and shallow crossers, but rotate to Cover 4 Drop on obvious deep shot downs since Sink leaves the intermediate middle thinner against combo routes attacking both hooks at once.
