Breakdown

DB Sting 2 Buzz is a Cover 2 zone blitz out of the Dime 1-4-6 Big Dime personnel that sends a five man pressure look with a line stunt while dropping into a two deep, five under zone shell behind it. The diagram shows both cornerbacks pressing outside receivers before sinking underneath, two deep half safeties sitting over the top, and a stunt up front with the defensive tackle looping through a gap vacated by a blitzing linebacker or DB. This is a zone beater disguised as a blitz package, so the primary read progression is pressure integrity first (make sure the stunt gets home) and if the quarterback escapes the pocket, fall back into buzzing the underneath zones to take away hot routes and quick game.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line splits and running back alignment pre-snap, if the back stays in to block it usually confirms the offense expects pressure and may check into a quick throw. Post-snap, key the guard or center reaction to the stunt, if the interior lineman picks up the looping rusher cleanly you need to trust your zone drops and buzz the shallow crossers instead of chasing the quarterback. This look is effective against man beater concepts like slants and spot routes since the extra shallow defenders undercut those breaks, but it is vulnerable to quick outs and hitches thrown before the stunt develops. Corner routes and deep outs into the flat can exploit the buzz technique if the underneath defender bites too hard inside, so keep outside leverage on your zone drop until the route declares. Against empty formations, identify if the offense is running a hot route into the vacated blitz lane, since a quick slant or drag behind the stunting lineman can pick up easy yardage before your underneath zones convert.

Usage Tips

Use this on early down and distance or short yardage passing situations where the offense is likely to call quick game or a run play since the blitz and stunt can blow up handoffs and screens.

Pre-snap, check if the offense has trips or bunch to one side and consider shifting the zone drops or using a defensive adjustment to double the number one receiver since the underneath zones can get stretched horizontally.

Identify empty backfield or shotgun spread formations before the snap since the line stunt combined with the DB blitz can generate a fast interior pressure that offensive lines struggle to pick up in max protect.

Pair this call with Cover 2 Sink or Cover 2 Man earlier in a series so the quarterback sees a similar shell presnap and cannot distinguish the blitz look from a standard two deep zone until after the snap.

Avoid calling this on third and long against trusted pocket passers who can read blitz quickly, since if the stunt is picked up you are left in a vanilla two deep shell with only five underneath defenders and no extra rush.
