Breakdown

Cross 3 Fire is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the Dime 1-4-6 Big Dime personnel. Up front the diagram shows a line stunt with the two interior rushers crossing paths off the snap while the two outside rushers run straight upfield contain rush, designed to confuse the offensive line's blocking assignments and free up an interior lane. Behind the stunt, three deep defenders sink into thirds while the two flanking underneath defenders sink into the purple hook/curl zones and the middle defender covers the shallow cross underneath. Since this is a defensive play call, the primary read is the quarterback's eyes: key the drop of the shallow crosser defender first to see if he widens or sits, then confirm the deep thirds are getting proper depth before deciding whether to spy the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line's initial slide protection at the snap, if they slide away from the stunt side you have a free rusher through the interior gap. Key the shallow crosser in the middle of the field, if the receiver settles into the hook zone the underneath defender should stay square and not bite on the initial break. Check the safety alignment before the snap, two high safeties tightening down late usually signals a rotation into this exact Cover 3 shell and confirms the call is disguised well. Post-snap, track the deep thirds defenders' depth, if the outside thirds get too aggressive on comeback routes the middle third defender must widen to protect against the deep crosser. This call gets exposed by quick game concepts and screens that attack the stunt before the rush develops, so user control the interior defender to react fast if the running back leaks out.

Usage Tips

Call Cross 3 Fire on early downs when you expect play-action or a quick game plan, since the line stunt takes a beat to develop and can get gashed by a fast draw or screen.

Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a 2x2 or 3x1 set; against 3x1 you may want to shade the stunt away from the strength to avoid a free runner off the back side.

Use the interior crossing stunt to bait the quarterback into holding the ball a half second longer, then close the deep thirds hard on comeback and dig routes.

Pair this call with Overload Blitz or FS Zone Blitz on the following snap so the offense cannot key the stunt direction and starts guessing on protection slides.

Avoid calling this on obvious passing downs against mobile quarterbacks, since the interior stunt can create rush lanes the QB escapes through if contain is not disciplined.
