Fake Fg Holder Blast is a designed run play out of the Field Goal formation in Special personnel that catches opponents sleeping when they expect a kick. The holder takes the direct snap and follows a blast concept up the middle behind the personal protector and interior linemen, who fire off the ball to create a rushing lane before the defense can react to the fake. This is not a pass concept at all, it is a straight gap run designed to exploit defenses that send only a token rush and drop no one into coverage since they are anticipating a kick. The primary read is simply the initial crease created by the blast blocking up front, with the holder reading the leverage of the first unblocked defender inside the tackle box.
Pre-snap, check whether the defense is in a standard field goal block formation with all eleven defenders shading toward blocking angles instead of run fits, since this confirms they are not expecting the fake. Look for a defender identified as a personal protector spy or an edge defender staying home instead of rushing the kick, which indicates the defense has scouted your fake tendencies and will blow this play up immediately. Post-snap, key the interior defensive linemen to see if they collapse the blast lane before the holder can get through, which happens against defenses that maintain gap discipline even in field goal look. If the defense shows any late safety rotation toward the line of scrimmage before the snap, abort this call since that safety can fill the alley and stop the blast for a loss or minimal gain. This play is shut down completely by any defense that has previously been burned by a fake and now sends a spy or keeps a second level defender square, so never call it twice against the same opponent without changing the fake concept.
Only call this when the defense has shown zero fake awareness on previous field goal attempts in the game or in your scouting of the opponent tendencies.
Use this on obvious short yardage field goal range situations, ideally fourth down inside the 35 yard line, where defenses are most likely to relax and jog through their rush.
Watch pre-snap for defenders lining up flat footed or standing upright without their hands down, since that signals they are not anticipating a run fake and will not fire off the snap.
Sequence this after you have run at least one legitimate field goal earlier in the game so the defense has no reason to suspect a fake, then call Fake Fg Holder Blast when the personnel and situation look identical.
