Fake Fg Holder Power is a trick run play out of the Field Goal formation in Special personnel that catches defenses sleeping on a normal kick attempt. The holder takes the snap and runs a power concept behind pulling blockers, using the field goal unit's surprise element instead of any route combo or coverage read. This is purely a gap scheme run play designed to exploit lazy field goal defense alignments rather than a pass concept, so the primary read is simply hitting the power lane as the guard and blocking back seal the edge.
Watch for defenses that stack extra bodies on the line trying to block the kick rather than staying disciplined in run fits, since that overcommitment is exactly what this play exploits. If the opposing defense sends a jumper or edge rusher upfield hard to block the kick, the power lane opens instantly because the blocking back has a clean kickout angle. This play gets shut down by defenses that recognize personnel and treat the field goal formation as a run alert, keeping linebackers square and contain defenders honest on the edge. Look at the depth of the punt or field goal return team's front line pre-snap. If they are lined up too far off the ball trying to leap and block the kick, they cannot recover in time for run fits. Post-snap, key whether the edge defender squeezes down the line of scrimmage or bites on the kick fake, since a disciplined edge defender who stays home kills the power concept before it develops.
Only call this on 4th down or in end of half situations where the defense is likely to jog out a standard field goal block unit without stacking the line for run support.
Check the defensive alignment before the snap. If you see extra defenders crashing the kick or overloading one edge, this is a green light since the backside power lane will be wide open.
Mix this in after you have shown a couple of legitimate field goal attempts earlier in the game so the defense trusts the personnel grouping and relaxes.
Pair this call in your gameplan with Fake Fg K Toss Pass and Fake Fg Sprintout Pass so opponents cannot key on run versus pass tendencies out of the same look.
Snap the ball quickly once you confirm the defense is in standard field goal block alignment, since any hesitation gives smart opponents time to sim check or call a timeout.
