Field Goal 2

Special·Field Goal·Personnel not specified

Breakdown

Field Goal 2 is the standard kick formation used to attempt a field goal, lining up the kicker, holder, long snapper, and protection unit in the standard special teams alignment. There is no route concept, blocking scheme progression, or read to make since this is a straight kick attempt rather than a fake. The only decision point is whether to run this legitimate kick or pivot to one of the fake FG plays in the set, such as Fake Fg Holder Blast or Fake Fg K Toss Pass, based on the defensive personnel and situation.

Defensive Reads

On defense, key on the offense's personnel and formation discipline before the snap. If the holder is not aligned in the traditional depth position or the personnel looks tight to the line, be ready for a fake. Watch the edges pre-snap for any hint of unbalanced numbers, which can signal a fake pass concept like Fake Fg Rollout Pass or Fake Fg Sprintout Pass. If your defense sends a hard user rush off the edge and the offense snaps normally into Field Goal 2, you risk a roughing the kicker penalty, so time your rush conservatively unless you are confident it is a real kick. Field Goal 2 as a straight kick cannot be beaten by coverage or blitz packages since there is no pass or run element, so your only real defensive discipline is jumping the snap count to legally block the kick. Post-snap, track the ball flight and kicker leg swing immediately. If the holder bobbles the snap or the formation shifts at the last second, react to a potential fake rather than committing fully to a block attempt.

Usage Tips

Use Field Goal 2 as your default call any time you are within your kicker's realistic range and want a guaranteed points attempt instead of risking a fourth down conversion.

Check the defense's alignment before the snap. If you see the defense selling out with extra rushers on the line or crashing the edges, consider audibling to a fake like Fake Fg Sprintout Pass or Fake Fg Rollout Pass to exploit an overaggressive block attempt.

Mix in fakes from this same set sparingly earlier in a franchise or ranked set so opponents respect the straight kick call later in a game, then punish overcommitted defenses with Fake Fg Holder Power or Fake Fg K Direct Snap in a critical short yardage spot.

On windy maps or in user-controlled kick meters, take extra time on the meter to avoid a shanked or blocked attempt, especially from beyond 45 yards.

In two minute drill or end of half situations, only call Field Goal 2 if you have a real shot at the distance since a missed long attempt gives the opponent short field position.
