HB Inside Zone out of Singleback Wing Tight Nasty is a pure zone blocking run play with heavy personnel (13 group) up front, showing a tight formation with a wing tight end and extra blockers bunched to one side. The offensive line steps in unison and blocks in zone gap concept, with the back taking the handoff and pressing the line before reading his blockers to find the crease. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is inside out: attack the frontside gap first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the front is overloaded or flowing hard.
Defensive Reads
Watch the defensive line alignment before the snap, a 4-3 under front with the nose shaded to the tight end side will clog the frontside gap and force a cutback read. Key the linebacker depth, linebackers stacked tight to the line can shoot gaps quickly and disrupt zone blocking before it develops. Identify safety rotation, a single high safety cheating into the box signals run support and makes inside zone tougher to execute against a stacked front. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side create the cutback lane, so if the user jumps the frontside gap immediately bounce the run backside. Blitz packages with edge pressure off the wing tight end side can be neutralized by the extra blocker, but interior stunts and A gap blitzes are the biggest threat to blow this play up before it starts.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap to check the defensive front, if you see an odd front with a head up nose tackle the frontside A gap will be tighter so plan to bounce backside. Motion is not shown in this look so rely on box count, if the defense has six or more in the box consider checking to a passing concept like Stick Spacing instead. Pair this play with Counter Strong and Duo in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one blocking scheme, the mirrored initial steps make it hard for defenders to key run direction. Against aggressive linebackers who crash downhill, use the cutback lane and trust your zone blocking rather than forcing the play backside every snap. This play shines on early downs in normal or short yardage situations where you need a manageable gain and want to keep defenses honest for play-action shots like Mtn PA Boot Lt later in the drive.
