HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Tight Nasty is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally before deciding where to plant and cut upfield. The offensive line and TE(s) flow in unison toward the play side, reach blocking defenders to create a cutback lane, while the diagram shows the HB path bending from the backfield toward the edge before the run develops. This is a pure zone run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read progression is the playside alley (cutback lane) first, reading the flow of the defensive line and playside linebacker to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut it back against overpursuit.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a heavy box with an extra linebacker or safety crept down near the line, since that alignment is built to stop outside zone. Watch cornerback and safety depth on the play side, as a hard rotated safety down into the box signals run support that can erase the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker: if they crash hard upfield to string the play out, the cutback lane behind them will be there for the HB to exploit. User a linebacker with fast pursuit angles to flow with the zone action and close the cutback lane, since AI defenders often overpursue and get gashed. This run struggles most against gap-sound fronts and defensive tackles who hold their gap rather than shooting upfield, so heavy interior run-stopping personnel and a spy linebacker in the middle of the field shut it down.
Usage Tips
Run this out of early down and distance situations like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots from this same formation. Pre-snap, check for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Stretch struggles against stacked fronts with extra run support. Use manual motion or a stick drag on the HB path to set up the cutback lane if the defense flows too hard toward the play side. Pair this with Mtn PA Boot Lt and PA U-Drag Wheel from the same set so linebackers respect the outside zone action and bite on the play fake, opening throwing lanes off similar backfield footwork. Against aggressive edge defenders who crash hard, user the HB early and cut it back behind the guard-center double team rather than forcing it outside into a losing angle.
