Stick Spacing out of Singleback Wing Tight Nasty is a classic Stick concept pass play designed to attack zone coverage with quick, high-percentage throws. The backside receiver runs a deep drag across the field while the outside receiver on that side pushes vertical, giving the quarterback a clear-out and horizontal stretch option away from the strength. On the play side, you get the true Stick combo: an outside receiver sitting down on a quick out or flat route, a slot man running a short hitch or stick route at the sticks, and a receiver climbing vertically to hold off any deep defenders, while the running back releases into a flat route underneath. The primary read progression starts with the flat route defender to determine if the underneath flat or the stick route in the middle is open, then works to the vertical clear-out and backside drag if the defense rotates hard to that side.
Presnap, key the strong side linebacker depth and outside cornerback alignment to determine if the defense is sitting in a shallow zone designed to take away the stick route. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that is the primary threat that jumps the stick route and baits quarterbacks into a costly turnover. If the defense shows two high safeties with soft corners, expect Cover 4 and look to attack the seams and stick route before the safeties can rotate down. Cover 2 zones with an aggressive flat defender can undercut the stick route quickly, so track whether the corner sinks under the stick or stays wide on the flat route. Man coverage with no underneath help is where this concept struggles most, since the stick route lacks natural separation against tight man technique, so be ready to hot route or check to a different concept if you see man alignment presnap.
Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing zone or man by checking linebacker depth and safety rotation, since Stick Spacing thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. If you see man coverage with no safety help over the stick route, hot route the flat defender to a quick out to create instant separation. Use this play on second and short to medium distance situations where defenses often sit in zone to prevent big plays over the middle. Pair this with HB Inside Zone or Duo out of the same Wing Tight Nasty set to keep defenses honest and force them to respect the run before you come back to Stick Spacing on early downs. If the defense starts jumping the stick route after multiple reps, sequence in Dig Y-Wheel or PA U-Drag Wheel from the same formation to punish overaggressive linebackers with a double move shot play.
