Mtn PA Y-CoPo is a play-action man beater out of Singleback Wing Tight Nasty with 13 personnel. The Y receiver runs the corner post breaking outside then cutting back across the middle to attack the seam vacated by man defenders, while the yellow route works a deep crossing pattern underneath from the backside, and a checkdown flattens to the sideline for a quick outlet. The fullback stays in to help sell the run fake and protect the edge, giving the quarterback time to let the corner post develop as the primary read against man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety depth and width before the snap, since a single high safety leaning toward the Y receiver side signals help over the top on the corner post. Watch the play side cornerback technique, if he is playing outside leverage the post should have room to break inside for the throw. Key the middle linebacker at the snap, a fast drop into the intermediate zone can jump the crossing route and turn it into a pick six. Beware of a corner blitz off the edge, since the fullback and tackle are the only protection against pressure on that side. If the defense shows two high safeties rotating down after the snap, expect the underneath zone beaters to be the better options instead of forcing the post.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like a single high safety with corners lined up tight on the receivers, since the corner post route is built to separate against trail technique. Use motion if available to identify man versus zone before the snap, then key on whether the defender follows across the formation. Hot route the flat route to a deeper option if you see the defense sitting on short throws in zone.
