Wide Zone from Singleback Trips Open is a pure outside zone run play with the HB taking a lateral aiming point toward the play side edge before reading his blocks. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, flowing horizontally to seal defenders and create a natural cutback lane, while the trips receivers to the play side simply stalk or run off their defenders to clear the perimeter. This is not a play-action or RPO look, it is a straightforward zone run play designed to stress lateral pursuit, with the primary read being the HB's one cut decision based on the flow of the playside linebackers and edge defenders.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the linebackers are stacked tight to the line, which signals a run blitz designed to beat zone schemes before the blockers can get set. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down inside the HB has a clean bounce lane to the sideline. Post-snap, key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overruns the play side gap the cutback lane opens directly behind the center. This run beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that flow too fast laterally, but it struggles against gap sound defenses like 46 Bear or heavy fronts with extra defenders in the box. Look for user controlled defenders spying the backfield instead of reading blocks, as this often causes overpursuit that a patient cutback exploits.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.
Use the trips side alignment to bait the defense into rotating coverage away from the run, then attack the boundary if the backside is lighter.
Hot route the backside receiver on a quick out or slant if you see a corner crashing down to help in run support, forcing a conflict for that defender.
Pair this with HB Trap and HB Dive out of the same Trips Open look to keep defenders honest on their run fits and prevent them from selling out to one gap.
Best used on early downs or short yardage situations where a patient one cut runner can find a crease before the second level linebackers flow over the top.
