Spacing is a horizontal timing concept out of Singleback Trips Open that stretches the underneath zones with five quick, short breaking routes across the width of the field. The three receivers to the trips side run a hitch, a shallow drag, and a quick out at staggered depths while the backside receiver and running back add a stick and flare option, forming a full-field horizontal stretch. This is a classic zone beater built to exploit Cover 3 and Cover 4 by attacking the soft spots between the corner, hook, and curl defenders, with the primary read progression working from the outside hitch to the inside drag and finally to the checkdown flare based on which underneath defender widens or sinks first.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing since two deep safeties split wide with linebackers showing zone drops signals Cover 4, which this play is designed to exploit through the seams between zones. Watch the flat defender at the snap since he has to choose between the hitch and the drag route, and whichever way he leans tells you the open throwing lane. Man coverage with press corners at the line is the primary counter to this play, since the short routes have no natural separation against tight man technique, so be ready to hot route a receiver into a slant or fade if you see man alignment. Look for a user lurking underneath in the shallow zone, since a smart user player can sit on the drag route and jump the throw if you stare it down too long. Blitzes that bring extra defenders from the second level force this play into a quick decision, so if you see linebackers creeping toward the line pre-snap, get ready to fire the hitch route immediately since your protection will not hold long.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick shift to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since Spacing loses value against tight man coverage without a hot route adjustment. If you see two deep safeties with linebackers sitting flat footed, expect Cover 4 and target the drag route sitting behind the linebackers before the flat defender can close. Against Cover 3, throw with anticipation to the hitch route as soon as the corner drops into his deep third, since the flat defender is stretched horizontally and cannot cover every level. This play shines on third and short to third and medium since every route breaks within five to eight yards, giving you a high floor conversion option. Pair Spacing with PA Streak or Four Verticals in the same set so defenses that sit on the short routes get burned over the top once they start jumping the drags and hitches. On early downs, alternate Spacing with Bubble Screen or HB Slip Screen to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from sinking too deep into their zone drops.
