HB Draw out of Singleback Trips Open shows a play fake with the offensive line pass blocking at the snap to sell dropback pass before the running back presses forward and cuts upfield behind the delayed handoff. The trips side (three receivers) and the backside single receiver run vertical stems purely to hold cornerbacks and safeties in coverage, not as live progression reads. This is a base run play designed to bait pass rushers into overpursuing off the edges, letting the interior line climb to the second level for the HB to find a crease. Primary read is the frontside gap created by the guard and center combo blocks, with the back reading the linebacker flow before deciding to bend the run backside if the initial hole is clogged.
Watch for defenders keying the mesh point immediately after the snap rather than dropping into pass coverage, which signals the defense has diagnosed draw and will fill gaps fast. A spy linebacker sitting in the middle of the field pre-snap is the biggest indicator this play gets shut down, since the delayed handoff gives him a clean angle to the ball. If the defensive line is up field rushing hard off the snap, that is a green light, the draw exploits overaggressive rush lanes since blockers can climb to the second level once rushers commit. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, which suggests run blitz or a heavy front designed to beat exactly this concept. Man coverage on the trips receivers with no underneath zone defenders sitting still is a good sign the linebackers are occupied with man responsibilities and will be slower to read the run.
Call this play when the defense shows an aggressive four man rush or delayed blitz look, since the pass set from your offensive line freezes edge rushers and interior blitzers for a full count. Use it on second and medium or third and short when the defense is in a nickel or dime sub package expecting pass, since those fronts have lighter boxes and less run support at the second level. Pair HB Draw with PA Streak or PA FL Stretch from the same Trips Open set so the defense has to respect both the play fake pass and the delayed run out of an identical pre-snap picture. Avoid calling this against a defense that is stacking the box or showing heavy blitz off the snap, since there is no time for the delayed action to develop. Motion is not needed here, but watch linebacker depth pre-snap. If they are sitting shallow and reading run keys immediately, check to a quicker hitting run like HB Slam or HB Dive instead.
