Breakdown

HB Slam is a downhill run play out of Singleback Trips Open with 10 personnel, sending the HB straight into the middle of the formation off a quick mesh point with the QB. The diagram shows all five trips receivers running vertical stem routes upfield, which clears out any second level defenders and holds corners and safeties in coverage rather than attacking downhill as run support. This is a run play designed to hit the inside gap fast, with the primary read being the frontside gap first and a quick cutback lane if the interior fills hard.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are creeping up tight to the line expecting run, this play can still work because the trips vertical releases occupy underneath defenders. Check safety alignment, a single high safety shell leaves the box light and favors this inside run, while two deep safeties often means an extra defender is sitting in the box. Post-snap, key on the interior linebackers filling their gaps immediately, a fast flow to the play side signals you should look for the cutback lane. This play struggles against stacked eight man fronts or aggressive nano blitzes that shoot gaps pre-snap, since there is minimal time for the blocking to develop before penetration arrives. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the mesh point or crashing down hard, which is the biggest threat to blowing up the timing of this dive concept.

Usage Tips

Call HB Slam on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage where defenses expect a balanced play call out of Trips Open. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense is in a light box with only six or fewer defenders in the box, this play hits fast before the second level can react. Use the vertical releases from the trips side to keep safeties honest and prevent them from crashing down as extra run defenders. Pair this with HB Trap or HB Draw from the same formation to keep defenders guessing between misdirection and downhill hits. If the defense shows a stacked box or crashes hard pre-snap, audible to a quick game pass like Stick or Slot Middle to punish the aggression.
