Breakdown

PA Streak out of Singleback Trips Open is a play-action shot play designed to attack single-high safety looks with a vertical stretch on the backside. The play fakes the handoff to hold linebackers and the box safety before releasing receivers on streak routes, with the trips side working to clear out underneath zones and create one-on-one leverage on the backside X. This is primarily a man beater against Cover 1 and Cover 3 looks, though it can punish a slow-rotating Cover 2 shell if the safety bites on the run fake. The primary read progression starts with the backside streak against man coverage, then works to the trips side vertical stem if the safety rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, single high with tight corners is the green light for the backside streak throw. Watch for the safety creeping down near the line of scrimmage before the snap, that indicates the defense is selling out to stop the run fake and the streak will be wide open behind him. Post snap, key the deep safety rotation, if he stays flat footed on the run fake for even a half second, the backside streak will separate against most man corners. Cover 2 shells with safeties splitting the field are the toughest matchup for this play since the deep half defender can sink under the streak, so be ready to check the primary read. Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle, since the trips side vertical stem can get picked off if the linebacker recognizes play action and drops immediately instead of stepping up.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box, this play is designed to punish that run fake.

Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the run fake actually holds the defense, it loses effectiveness on obvious passing downs.

Hot route the trips side slot into a deep cross or dig if you are facing zone heavy opponents, this gives you a answer against Cover 3 without abandoning the shot play design.

Pair this with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a drive to sell the run fake, defenders who bite on those runs will get burned when you come back with PA Streak.

Do not force the backside streak into tight man coverage with a deep safety already shaded that direction, check down to the trips concept or throw it away if the shot is not there.
