Four Verticals out of Singleback Trips Open sends all four eligible receivers vertical to stretch the defense from sideline to sideline. The backside X runs a straight go route up the numbers, while the three trips receivers push vertical with the middle trips receiver working a skinny post to attack the seam and the inside slot receiver bending a vertical route toward the opposite hash. The HB stays in to check release and pass protect, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to read the field. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to overload zone defenses with four verticals against three deep defenders, with the primary read starting on the seam route from the trips side before working backside to the X go route.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties versus one high safety, since Cover 2 shells are vulnerable to the seam routes splitting the safeties. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender at the snap, if they carry vertical with the trips receivers instead of passing them off, that signals man coverage and the backside go route becomes the priority throw. Key the middle linebacker's drop depth, a shallow drop leaves the seam window wide open against Cover 3 and Tampa 2 looks. This play struggles against a true Cover 4 or quarters shell with disciplined deep defenders, since four verticals into four deep defenders removes any natural leverage advantage. Look for a user-controlled safety sitting in the middle of the field, a lurking safety reading the quarterback's eyes can jump the seam route and turn it into a pick six.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties shading toward trips usually means the backside X go route is your best matchup against a single high corner.
Against Cover 3, target the seam sitting between the flat defender and the deep third safety, that window opens up fast if the linebackers carry their drops shallow.
Hot route the inside trips receiver to a shallow drag if you see zero blitz or heavy pressure looks, this gives the quarterback a quick outlet against man coverage disguises.
Pair this play with PA Streak or 60 Go from the same formation to keep the defense honest on vertical shots without tipping your hand pre-snap.
Best called on second or third and long when you need explosive yardage, since all four routes take time to develop and expose deep zone rotation.
