Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of Singleback Trips Open is a designed screen pass where the offensive line initially sets up a pass pocket before releasing to lead block for the HB in the flat, while the three trips receivers push vertically and break outside to clear space and occupy defensive backs. The X receiver runs a shallow crosser underneath to hold linebackers, and the outside routes from the trips side stretch the defense deep to open the screen lane. This is a classic zone and blitz beater designed to punish aggressive pass rushes and overplayed man coverage, with the primary read being the HB out of the backfield as soon as the linemen get out in front.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles and edge rushers who consistently crash upfield without containment discipline, since they take themselves out of the screen lane entirely. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, the trips routes will occupy those defenders and open a clean lane for the HB. Man coverage with aggressive blitz packages is where this play shines the most because rushers overrun the play and blockers get a clean release. To stop this play, defenses need a spy or a linebacker who reads the line release and stays home instead of dropping into a zone. User controlled defenders should key the offensive line, if guards or tackles release upfield instead of engaging, immediately squat and look for the HB out of the backfield. Nickel and dime packages with disciplined defensive ends who keep contain will limit the effectiveness of this screen significantly.

Usage Tips

Call this play when you see pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line or a defensive coordinator showing all out pressure looks. Use it as a changeup after running HB Dive or HB Trap from the same formation so the defense respects the run fake and bites on the interior gaps. Snap the ball and immediately let the screen develop, resist the urge to check down early since the blockers need time to release and get in front of the HB. Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Streak earlier in a drive to bait aggressive user blitzers into flying upfield, then dial up this screen to make them pay. Best used on early downs or obvious passing situations against defenses that consistently bring five or six man pressure.
