Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high look, since 60 Slide is designed to exploit zone coverage rather than tight man coverage. Watch the flat defender on the trips side, if he sinks with the vertical release from the inline slot receiver, the slide route will have an open throwing lane underneath him. Key the middle linebacker depth, a shallow drop from him signals zone and opens the two seam routes as the second level of the read. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle can jump the seam throws, so if you see a defender flashing down after the snap, expect the quarterback to come back to the slide route in the flat. This concept struggles against aggressive man coverage with a hard outside corner and a blitzing linebacker, since the slide route has nowhere to settle and the seams get contested at the catch point.
Usage Tips
Check the trips side alignment pre-snap, if the corner is sitting outside and a linebacker or nickel is shaded to that flat, the slide route will have room to settle before it climbs the corner track. Use this on second and medium to third and long since the vertical stems take time to develop and you need a clean pocket. Pair this with 60 Go from the same set so you can run both plays from an identical formation look and force the defense to respect the deep shot before you come back to the slide concept. Hot route the backside seam into a shorter option like a curl if you are getting quick pressure off the edge, since the deep stems eat clock. Against zone shells with soft flat defenders, throw the slide route on time in rhythm rather than waiting for it to fully break to the corner.
