Mtn X Whip runs a pre-snap motion out of the Bunch X Nasty set that shifts one bunch receiver across the formation before the snap to help identify man versus zone. At the snap, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route stretching the sideline, the middle bunch receiver runs a whip route settling underneath, one receiver clears out on a deep in behind the whip, and the backside X runs an out and up while the motion man works a shallow crosser underneath everything. This is a man beater built to exploit the whip route's stop and go leverage against man defenders, with the deep corner and deep in occupying the safeties over the top.
Watch the motion receiver before the snap, if a defender follows him across the formation you are getting man coverage and the whip route becomes the primary target. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who bite on the whip's initial break get beaten instantly by the stop and go. Read the safety alignment, two high safeties signal zone coverage and you should progress to the deep corner or deep in route over the middle. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane, a smart user can jump the underdrag and force you to the outside routes. This play struggles against aggressive man press blitzes since the whip route needs space to settle, so audible into a quick game concept if you see a nano blitz look pre-snap.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and safeties into showing man coverage before the ball is even snapped.
Target the whip route first against man coverage since the stop and settle move creates instant separation on linebackers and slower corners.
If you see two deep safeties in a zone shell, look to the deep corner or deep in route since the whip route will get swarmed by underneath zone defenders.
Pair this play with Mtn Z Whip and Mtn Flat Y Seam in the same set so the defense cannot key on which receiver is running the whip concept.
Best called on third and medium or in the red zone where the whip route's separation translates directly into a conversion or easy pitch and catch score.
