Mtn Y Lead Read Option is a shotgun read option run play out of the Y Trio Offset Wk set. The diagram shows jet/fly motion across the formation before the snap, with the quarterback reading a designated defender on the mesh point and either handing off on the give path or pulling it to run himself along the read lane shown sweeping toward the sideline. This is a pure run play (with option elements) rather than a dropback pass, and the primary read progression is the quarterback keying the edge defender at the mesh point to decide give versus keep, then working downhill or bouncing outside based on leverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the edge defender or force player on the play side before the snap since this is the man the quarterback is reading. If the defense shows a hard edge set with the linebacker scraping flat immediately at the snap, that is a sign they are playing assignment-sound scrape exchange and will shut down the keep option. User-controlled defenders flowing hard downhill on the running back's path are the biggest threat to the give read, so track for a jumped run fit. Off-coverage safeties who stay deep before the snap suggest the defense is respecting the read option keep, which opens up the motion man in space on a bubble or peek concept from this set. Overloaded fronts or nano blitz packages aimed at the mesh point can blow this play up before the quarterback ever makes his read, so check protection numbers pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender travels with the motion man.
If the read defender crashes hard on the running back, pull the ball and attack the edge using the space created by the motion.
This play works best on early downs (1st and 2nd, 2nd and short) when defenses are still respecting play-action and pass tags out of this set.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Post or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run key without giving up a big play through the air.
Alternate this play with Mtn Outside Zone and HB Power O to keep the read defender guessing between different mesh point looks from the same formation.
