RPO Zone Peek out of Shotgun Y Trio Offset Wk pairs an inside zone run scheme with a quick peek route to the backside, giving the quarterback a true run-pass conflict read on the play side linebacker or overhang defender. The offensive line and fullback or tight end execute standard zone blocking rules while one receiver releases into a shallow peek route that punishes aggressive run fits. This is an RPO designed to be a numbers and leverage beater against light boxes, with the primary read being the flow of the second level defender assigned to the peek receiver's side, if he crashes downhill to fill the run lane, pull and throw, if he stays home in coverage, hand it off.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a two high shell or single high, single high alignments often mean an extra man in the box which favors the pull and throw read. Key the play side linebacker's depth, if he is stacked tight to the line of scrimmage he is likely to crash on the run fake, giving the quarterback a clean throwing window to the peek route. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting at the mesh point, smart human defenders will bait the pull read and jump the peek route, so have a built-in check to run it anyway if the box stays light. Nano blitzes and interior line stunts can disrupt the zone blocking before the read even develops, if you see a stacked front with edge pressure packages called, expect the run to be blown up and lean toward the pass side. Zone shells with linebackers sinking into passing lanes rather than filling gaps take away the peek throw entirely, in that case trust the numbers and stay committed to the handoff.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this play is designed to hand off and let your zone blocking win up front.
Watch the alignment of the flat or overhang defender closest to the peek route, if he is sitting inside or cheating toward the run gap you have an easy pull and throw for an explosive gain.
Use this play on early downs in the second and third quarter to establish tendencies, then come back to Mtn Y Lead Read Option or Y Lead Read Option later in the drive so the defense has to respect both the give and keep looks.
Hot route the peek receiver into a quick out or hitch against man coverage if you anticipate a corner sitting in the throwing lane, this keeps the ball out fast before a blitzing linebacker can close.
